If possible I much prefer to paint from life rather than from photographs. Being with the model gives me time to know the subject in natural light. It affords any artist an easier path to an honest portrait. However, if it is physically impossible to do the portrait from life, I will work from photographs if they provide enough visual information about light and shadow, color and most importantly the expression, the “feel” of the subject.

All clients will have a contract designed to suit their needs. At the first meeting/phone conversation I like to establish:

1. type of portrait (formal/informal, indoors/outdoors, etc.)
2. how much time the subject can devote to sitting (if done from life I need 3-8 sessions)
3. the size of the portrait and where it will hang
4. the mood
5. the background
6. the clothes
7. the frame consideration (frame will be the responsibility of the client)

I usually like to spend about 60-90 minutes at the first meeting, talking, making sketches and taking reference photos. Photos may be taken several times so the painting might be finalized in my studio.
